Using RNA to get bespoke skincare product tips | Waterloo News
Agenek, a pioneering biotech company at Velocity, University of Waterloo’s startup incubator, unveiled a new RNA-based test that provides an unprecedented level of precision in recommending skincare products to consumers.
The skincare test offered by Agenek will provide people with a real-time biological snapshot of the needs of their skin and help them make educated choices, save time and money, and achieve better skin health.
“The skincare industry has often left consumers guessing,” said Ksenia Timonina, co-founder and CEO of Agenek. “Our mission with Agenek is to give people the tools to understand what their skin truly needs, grounded in data and real-time biology. With RNA-based insights, skincare becomes tailored, accurate, and sustainable.”
In a world where the average person spends over $15,000 on skincare, navigating an overwhelming array of products often leads to a cycle of costly trial-and-error. Agenek’s at-home, RNA-based skin test marks a departure from conventional methods by examining RNA to deliver real-time insights into specific skin needs — whether it’s collagen support, moisture retention, or sensitivity.
“Our approach isn’t just personalized — it’s dynamic,” said Anna Kotova, co-founder of Agenek “RNA gives us a snapshot of how your skin is functioning right now, making it possible to adjust skincare routines with precision as your skin evolves. This goes beyond products that claim to work. It’s about measurable, trackable results.”
Agenek’s test kit allows users to collect a skin sample from the comfort of their home. After sending the sample to Agenek’s lab, customers receive a comprehensive report detailing their skin’s current condition and tailored product recommendations. Unlike DNA testing, which examines unchanging genetic predispositions, Agenek’s RNA-based analysis reflects the skin’s present state, providing data that changes over time and can be tracked every three months.
“Velocity has a history of nurturing and launching successful technology companies that impact people’s lives,” said Moazam Khan, Director of Health at Velocity. “Agenik’s RNA based skincare technology is a market disruptor that provides consumers the ability to personalize their skincare routine using science-based evidence and help save them money by giving them the results they want.”
Agenek’s product, now available for pre-order at a 25 per cent discount, is competitively priced at US$199 per kit. Customers will soon be able to purchase a three-month subscription service, ensuring their regimen continues to meet their skin’s changing needs.
