Meet the Experts:
Ash K. Holm is a Los Angeles–based celebrity makeup artist who works with the likes of Hailee Steinfeld, Ariana Grande, Kim Kardashian, and more.
What Should Beginners Look for When Shopping For False Lashes?
“So many brands have kits now that include everything you need to get started: the lashes, adhesive, tweezer applicator, and even remover,” adds Holm. “Whether you’re going for a full glam look or something more natural, kits like this really set you up for success when you’re a beginner.”

What’s the Biggest Mistake People Make When Applying False Lashes?
“As someone with sensitive eyes, I know that some lash adhesives can be irritating, so always patch test before applying,” says Holm. “Use a light hand when applying the adhesive—you need a lot less than you think to hold lashes in place. If you’re using clusters, apply the bond adhesive in sections versus across the entire lash line at once so it doesn’t dry out.”
Holm also always reminds clients to remove lashes carefully. “As tempting as it might be to just pull them off, I recommend using an oil-based makeup remover or dedicated lash remover to help break down the adhesive,” she says.
Which False Lash Styles Are Easiest For Beginners?
While many would assume strip lashes are best for beginners, Holm explains that cluster styles are generally best. Cluster lashes often provide a more natural look and are easier to tailor to your eye shape.

How Can False Eyelashes Look Natural and Seamless?
“I’m a huge fan of lashes you apply underneath your natural lashes versus on top,” notes Holm. “I think the look is much more natural because you get a really seamless finish. I also prefer a clear band for this same reason.”
To keep your chosen lashes locked in all day, Holm advises applying a second layer of glue to the outer corners of your lashes to prevent lifting. “I do this on all of my clients to ensure there’s no lifting on a red carpet or while they’re performing,” she says.
