‘I changed my haircare routine after trying liquid scalp scrub to extend my no-wash days’
The gentle exfoliator is nothing like what I’ve tried before and it certainly reduced the oiliness on my scalp, so much so that I stopped washing my hair every day
Scalp care has become a huge focus in haircare this year, with many brands having introduced their very own scalp scrub to help shoppers rebalance the scalp, leaving hair fresh, clean, and healthy-looking. As a beauty writer, I have come to terms that crystal, rock-like scrubs are not my favourite. They get stuck in my hair and are hard to rinse off.
That’s when I turned my attention to Remi haircare’s Bye Bye Build Up Scalp Exfoliator – a liquid exfoliator powered by AHA and BHA. It’s available on Remi’s online shop and on Amazon for £29 and £30 respectively. For years I have been washing my hair every day to avoid getting oily scalp, and this product has made my scalp less irritated.
I had a chat with founder and clinical trichologist Claire Fullam a few weeks ago and learned a lot about taking care of our scalps. This Remi Scalp Exfoliator, which is to be used 10 minutes before shampoo, clears blocked follicles by removing dead skin, excess oil and impurities.
Claire said: “Think of your hair follicles as a well, and the impurities, dead skin, and oil – they are like dry leaves blocking the well – stop the flow of nutrients to reach the follicles for hair growth. I created this triple acid solution to remove buildup. This is going to make your shampoo work, this is going to make any other thing you put on your scalp work a lot better and improve the efficacy of that product.”
I love how easy it is to apply the exfoliator onto my scalp and I only have to use it once a week and wait for five to 10 minutes before shampoo. There’s no need to massage the product in and I spent less than a minute to rinse them off.

Dermatologically tested, it soothes irritation, reduces dandruff, and rebalances the scalp’s surface for unimpeded hair growth and vitality
Prior to that, I have tried Philip Kingsley’s Scalp Toner, which retails at £25, it’s recommended to use after shampoo and it targets flaky and irritated scalp. On the other hand, Goldwell Dualsenses’ Scalp Specialist has a thicker texture and it aims to thicken and improve density on thinning hair. It’s available at LookFantastic for £18.20.
The Remi Scalp Exfoliator is not a product that delivers instant results. Over time, it reduces flaking, oiliness and itch on the scalp while hydrating and strengthening the roots for unimpeded hair growth.
Within four weeks of use, shoppers will notice less flaking and oiliness. And after three months of use, they can expect to feel cleaner hair with improved scalp clarity and a reduction in blocked follicles.
I have been using the exfoliator for two weeks and while I don’t have dandruff, I did notice less itch on the scalp, and I broke my routine and skipped a wash day without feeling greasy. One shopper shared a word of advice and reminded people not to overuse it, saying: “I have very thick hair and sometimes dry scalp. Although I am happy with how clean it is after I wash it, I have had difficulties getting rid of the flakes due to the thickness of my hair so I figured this thing would help.”
They continued: “Although I stuck to the instructions, I seem to have overused it because it ended up drying my scalp further which ironically made it worse for me. This could be user error, I could’ve been more careful with it. I’d say you start slow with it and find your sweet spot within the limits they recommend. It helps but it can also make it worse if you’re not careful.”
A person loved the triple acid formula but she had a suggestion for package designs. They commented: “The bottle has a great nozzle applicator, but the bottle itself is pretty rigid, so I’ve found I need to use both hands to squeeze the liquid out in a controlled way. This would be a lot easier if the bottle was made of a plastic with more give in it.”
But the Remi Scalp Exfoliator is a five-star for some customers, with one buyer sharing: “I suffer with seborrheic dermatitis on my scalp which really gets me down and I have found very few products that deal with it. None have dealt with it as quickly as this. Within two uses my dermatitis has almost completely gone.
“My scalp thickens and gets itchy, which then results in very large flakes of skin coming off when I scratch. Three days after my last use of this, I have no itching still and no thickened skin. I still have a little flaking from the typical dandruff that I have always suffered from but it is much reduced.”
