Dyson Just Launched A Futuristic Haircare Line. Here’s An Exclusive First Look
A few months ago, the beauty arm of Dyson changed its Instagram handle (@DysonHair) with no explanation. The new name – @DysonBeauty – hinted at the tech brand’s next move. After much speculation, a visit to the Wiltshire labs and a promise to keep D-9 (the project’s code name) a secret, I can finally talk about Dyson’s new category: haircare, but without the electricity.
The brand has unveiled two debut styling products to complement its popular hair tools: a Pre-Style Cream and Post-Style Serum in four variants, to work across all hair types and offer light or rich conditioning. All of the formulas were tested in 80 per cent relative humidity – the most challenging environment when it comes to maintaining a hairstyle.
Rather than harnessing the latest technology, this time the team at Dyson has turned its attention to ingredients and the power of nature in order to find solutions for achieving hairstyles that last and last. They hit on an ingredient found in the cells of mushrooms – chitosan – which gives them their structure and shape. There are five mushrooms’ worth in each bottle of Dyson’s new hair products, which benefit from what it is calling triodetic technology.
The chitosan is blended with different ingredients to create formulas for different hair types. Grapeseed oil is for finer hair, for example, while coconut oil offers a creamier texture. Low- and medium-molecular weight hyaluronic acid protects against humidity, to stop frizz in its tracks.
In the brand’s hair labs, real hair is used to test products and tools in the development phase. Afterwards, any undamaged hair is donated to the Little Princess Trust, and anything damaged is sent to a charity that uses hair to soak up oil spills.
It’s the attention to detail that sets Dyson apart when it comes to new product development, and the chitosan hair care range is no different. From the oh-so-satisfying magnetic lids, to the precise 0.22ml dosing administered from a single pump – which takes the guesswork out of how much product to use, reduces waste and stops you applying too much – the packaging is as sleek and considered as you would expect. And of course, the bottles are refillable.
The final question for the team in the development process was, what should Dyson haircare smell like? “Genderless,” founder James Dyson told the fragrance house the brand worked with. “Clean, sophisticated and fresh.” So, expect your high-tech hair to come with notes of bergamot, a white floral middle and a dry down for an all day scent of cedarwood, musk and oak moss.
