5 fall beauty trends to try this season, according to makeup pros
As the seasons change, so too do our beauty routines. Skincare generally becomes more hydrating as temperatures drop, while makeup often gets dialed up again after a season of simple, sweat-proof looks.
But there are a lot of trends out there, so we reached out to the pros to ask which ones they think stand out from the crowd. Here are five looks to try this fall.
Chance of frost
Shimmery washes of colour on lips, cheeks and eyes aren’t just for the holiday season, according to Montreal-based makeup artist Ashley Diabo. She points to the glimmering pouts seen at Christopher John Rogers Fall 2025 show and Lady Gaga’s glam in her Abracadabra music video that combines multiple frosts in one look.
Worried about glistening finishes skewing too ’70s or ’80s? Diabo has a tip: “Keep the rest of the skin fresh and dewy so the frosts look intentional rather than retro.” And don’t worry if you’re not skilled with a brush. “Frosts are surprisingly forgiving when blending, which makes them beginner-friendly yet impactful,” she said.
Blush off
After seasons of blush-forward beats (hello, Sabrina Carpenter), Vancouver-based makeup artist Maria Renée Walton is inspired by the way models like Karolina Spakowski and Adwoa Aboah appear to be ditching the product altogether.
This approach lets your eye makeup and skin care routine do the talking, she said, so if you’d like to try out this look, turn your focus to these areas instead. Then, if you feel a little washed out, you can add a hint of warmth back to your complexion with a subtle cream bronzer. “[It’s] all your skin needs to bring back some life,” Walton said.
All blurry
Both experts also highlighted a less-polished approach for fall, particularly smudged and diffused looks. “Blurriness as an overall technique feels so refreshing right now,” said Diabo. “It’s liberating not to stress about extreme precision: makeup doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful.”
For the lips, she recommends applying colour to the lip line and softly smearing it for a cool, effortless vibe.
The same approach goes for the eyes. Walton suggests smudging deep jewel tones like aubergine, amethyst and emerald on the upper and lower lashlines. Think of it as a more eye-colour-enhancing version of the “bored and bitchy” glam sported by “It Girls” Charli XCX and Gabbriette, she said. “A super basic jewel-toned shadow stick, black pencil and mascara will do the trick.”
To get the look, both artists recommended using your finger; tap, smudge and blend for a true undone effect.
Red hot
These days, it seems we can’t get enough of the contoured lip liner look; buzzy beauty brands like Rhode and Merit even dropped their own iterations this year. However, for Walton, “a clean cut, no-nonsense true rouge” is what feels fresh for fall. More specifically, a bold lip paired with barely anything else on the face — a look inspired by 2010s Tumblr-era “It Girl” Alexa Chung.
“No mascara, no blush. Just skin prep, perhaps a touch of concealer, and your favourite red liner and lipstick,” Walton said.
On mute
This season’s response to the glowy Guava Girl beauty looks that dominated summer? A ’90s-inspired cool-toned matte palette, said Diabo. It’s another trend beloved by Gabbriette and was also spotted on models at Marie-Adam Leenaerdt and Tory Burch’s Fall 2025 shows.
“The matte finish keeps it chic and timeless,” Diabo explained, adding that these sophisticated shades of greige and taupe flatter most skin tones when paired with a neutral lip or strong liner.
